How do I get only filtered data?

I am new to datatables and am using the "column filter" plugin. I basically need to loop through and find all unique values in a column after a filter has been applied. But I have no idea how to do this with pagination enabled, as because both fnGetNodes and fnGetData seems to return all data that was loaded in the table.

Any help is appreciated
