Regular expression syntax, regex syntax

Hi. Is there a reference to the regular expressions capability for filters? Does datatables use perl syntax? Some other syntax? Thanks in advance!
My real question is: how would one implement an OR filter on a column? For example, "JOE" or "FRED" would both be allowed?
