Column Filtering with Select box - exclude checkbox column

I am using the example [url]http://www.datatables.net/release-datatables/examples/api/multi_filter_select.html[/url] to provide user level filtering on columnar data. In the table, the first column MIGHT have a select option (check box) that when displayed, the select formats poorly. How can I define dataTables to exclude this column? Preferably, exclude any column that is a checkbox or radio button.
